Tampa’s loss is India’s gain, 500 PwC jobs come to India

In what hails as a bad news for IT employees in the US, PricewaterhouseCoopers is laying off about 500 in-house information technology employees — most from its offices in Tampa.

As per a report in AP, the layoffs will slash the ranks of PWC’s IT support staff by nearly half, from 1,100 to 600. This laying off has been done to have a better coordination of IT services between UK and the US.
Thinking about affected employees, PWC is encouraging them to apply for other open and new positions, and will provide severance packages for those who aren’t rehired.

As per other reports, many of these positions will go overseas and will be taken over by another company in India.
This is the second time PWC has cut jobs in Florida. Earlier this year, the firm cut back its tax practice in Orlando.

India create a $30 tablet PC for students

While organizations like the OLPC tried to hit the $100 mark for a netbook PC, India has gone a step further and created a $30 tablet PC
.
The device, called Sakshat, was unveiled by India’s Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. It is expected to become available in India next year targeting students. To begin with it will cost $30 and be manufactured elsewhere, but the aim is to get the price down to $10 and have all manufacturing done in India.
The device itself has a 10″ touchscreen 2GB of RAM, a USB port, and Wi-Fi built-in. It runs a Linux-based OS and bundled software software includes OpenOffice, a PDF reader, web browser , media player, and video conferencing app. Power will partially come from solar panels mounted to the case
Although the device is said to cost $30-$35 to manufacture, the Indian government may subsidize initial shipments by up to 50% taking the cost to student down to just $15.

73,000 Wordpress blogs shut down by U.S. Government

This is alarming. Torrent news site TorrentFreak is now reporting that Wordpress host Blogetery has been shut down by United States authorities… along with all 73,000 Blogetery-hosted blogs.

Although details are still very tentative, here’s what we know: Blogetery’s entire site has been taken down, and the company’s ISP is claiming that they had to terminate Blogetery’s account immediately after being ordered to do so by law enforcement officials, “due to material hosted on the server.”

“This was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm,” Blogetery’s ISP said. “This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.”

Although TorrentFreak speculates that this is part of a recent Homeland Security effort to take down file sharing sites, that doesn’t quite make sense: surely in that case Blogetery would have been asked to pull specific infringing blogs, not have the rug yanked out from under them.

No, the extreme response taken here by U.S. Authorities implies some sort of believed terrorist connection or child pornography ring, not just a handful of warez and MP3 blogs. Even so, though, unless Blogetery itself is suspect of harboring terrorists or child pornographers, it’s hard to condone this sort of extreme action that has instantly silenced over 73,000 users, the majority of whom are doubtlessly innocent of any wrong-doing.

Look out PDA, here comes TDA!

Novinit a French company has developed the worlds first TDA or Tactile Digital Assistant. The TDA is based on touch-screen technology and relies entirely on your thumbs for input, which are harder to lose than a stylus. The TDA is named Jackito and comes with two simultaneous touch points so you can operate it with your thumbs at the same time and so no need for a stylus. Using the TDA is very easy, since you can search a database or a large address book, with just your thumbs. Using the device with your thumbs is actually much faster than a stylus well at least thats what the company claims. The device comes with a variety of features like finger-touch control, battery life, fast graphics, multitasking, real-time processing, interchangeable skins and much more.

The idea of a device like Jackito was conceived from the fact that the worlds first touch screen based PDA was already developed by a US company called Litton in 1978 for the US and German armies. After some years Novinit pondered If theres a touch screen based PDA for the armies, why not for the gizmo lovers? Arnaud de la Fouchardire of Jackito says, The architecture chosen for Jackito focuses on user friendliness. Fingertips (as opposed to a stylus) are used as a natural device for touching the options displayed by the LCD touch screen. About 200 engineers from 10 countries for over 10 years, have worked on making this device better and $50 million has been invested in these efforts.

Seven Processors and a larger screen The Jackito runs on seven processors with full parallel-processing capabilities (two micro-controllers and five accompanying reconfigurable cores), a large 4.5 color QVGA LCD fingertip touch-screen that offers resolution of 320x240 dpi, display with landscape orientation and two SD/MMC card slots. The TDA runs on an operating system called 3ActilOS, has 2.5 MB SRAM and 16 MB NOR Flash memory. The Jackito measures 140 x 80 x 16 mm and weighs just 150 g. It feeds on a single AA battery, which according to the company, can sustain for several weeks. Using the touch-screen with your thumbs or index fingers means that you dont have to carry or use a stylus, keyboard or any other input device. Also Novinit says that the finger's contact area is hundred times larger than that of a stylus and a stylus exerts hundred times more pressure on the screen than a finger. Arnaud goes on to say that The Jackito is not only an electronic device, but also a personal companion, supporting the three essential ingredients of a well-balanced lifestyle works productivity, personal life and edutainment. The Jackito will also come preloaded with about twenty applications,  which includes games, puzzles, address book, clock, to-do list, synchronization feature, backup application, etc.

What can Web 2.0 Marketing do for you?

The arrival of Web 2.0 has transformed the online marketing landscape dramatically. Small and medium sized businesses can now compete on a level playing field with industry giants like Unilever or websites such as MySpace.

With Web 2.0 you can market your products on social networking sites and blogs at very little cost, while the new technology also allows you to monitor customer trends and measure results. Want to find out how well your content is received? Social media can give you near real-time feedback.

One of the oldest and most traditional methods of Web 2.0 marketing is targeted advertising on search engines. With this method you can have your ad listed on the search results page or appear within an article on a subject related to your product. These are generally paid for per click, but you can be guaranteed each click will bring a new visit to your site.

A much more recent phenomenon is the use of social networking websites to market products. This method is used by everyone from one man operations to multi-national corporations. A page on MySpace or FaceBook can boost the popularity of your product, but be sure to keep the content fresh and updated. Also, you will generally have a young audience here so the content should reflect this.

Blogs offer similar opportunities for Web 2.0 marketing. This is an inexpensive way to subtly market your product or service on the web. However, good content that is updated regularly is essential. Just talking about your products will drive visitors away. Your blog entries will have to be interesting, informative and well written.

If you feel you have the resources and talents in your organization to make interesting audio snippets, you could try podcasting. Again, you will need to provide something that listeners will want to hear, while promoting your product. For example, if you sell cars or car parts you could produce a podcast on car care tips.

Ideally, you'll want to get news and references to your business out there in as many ways as possible. Web 2.0 allows you to send news and press releases direct to the consumer. For example you could offer a RSS feed on your website, or submit search engine optimized press releases to online news sites.

The real attractiveness of Web 2.0 marketing is that it can be cheap. Not all of the options described above might be suitable to market your business, but a simple blog or MySpace page will cost you very little.

Not having a clear cut definition for Web 2.0 does not signify unimportance. With the speed at which ideas are created, thrown out, and modified, it's too easy to stand by and wait for "proof" of Web 2.0's effectiveness. Now is not the time to debate semantics. Now is the time to incorporate Web 2.0's tools into your marketing strategy.

China Renews Google’s License

The world’s largest search engine and the world’s most populous country traded barbs and threats this spring when Google said it might leave the country over the Chinese government’s Internet censorship. That fight cooled to a simmer over the last few months. Today, Google announced on its official blog that China has renewed its content provider license, further defusing the tension between the two.

Google has been waiting to hear back from Chinese authorities about its ICP license since the company filed for its renewal last week. The company’s license must be reviewed annually. Its renewal will allow the search giant to continue operating its China-based site, Google.cn. If Google had been unable to renew its license, it could have meant the end of the company’s operations in China.

iCloud is the world’s first free online computer

Its really Amazing News just have look at it.
Yesterday, iCloud, the world’s first free online computer launched after eight years of development. It allows users to have free storage, applications , virtual desktop, and backup in the cloud, accessible from any computer connected to the Internet.

The version that is now available to the public includes access with 3GB of free storage space (which isn’t much), 30 free applications (such as Office, Mail, Music, Video, IM, Sharing, Games, Collaboration, and Development tools), 20 free widgets, free backup  to provide secure storage. Further, it doesn’t require installation and can be run through Internet Explorer or Firefox. That means Safari, Chrome, and Opera lovers will just have to wait a bit longer.

No word yet on whether it can be accessed from Firefox Mobile. According to the site, even getting it running with Firefox is still being worked on. Also, no word of basic specs that are needed to run such a application. It seems to be working on my MacBook, but loading a bit sluggishly.

You can start your own free account over at iCloud’s website.

Isn't it Amazing !!!!!!!!

Google Docs now lets you draw : Just Try it

Back in 2007 Google acquired the San Francisco company Tonic Systems, whose expertise lay in products for creating presentations  in Java. That expertise was put to good use within Google and this week we can see the fruit of their labors with a new feature  addition to Google Docs. Google has added the ability to enhance your work with drawings.
They can be added to documents, spreadsheets, and presentations and are accessible via the Insert menu. This brings up a new window and a blank canvas on which to draw. The tools available to use include:
  • Line
  • Arrow
  • Scribble
  • Text
  • 113 predefined shapes and WordArt
You also get the expected fill color, line color, and line thickness editing abilities as well as being able to change the order, rotation, alignment, and grouping of the shapes in your drawing. Drawings can be created on your own or through collaboration with others turning the feature into a nice brainstorming tool for online meetings.
The reason it has taken so long to add drawing capabilities to Google Docs is down to performance according to the Google Blog post. In it Tony Glenning, Drawings Team Lead, says:

The drawing feature that we’ve built relies heavily on a relatively new capability in browsers: the ability to render vector graphics. We use the SVG (scalable vector graphics) standard to accomplish this in most browsers and VML (vector markup language) where SVG is not available. Only recently has the performance and ubiquity of such technology enabled us to deliver what we hope is a delightful feature. As browsers continue to improve, we can deliver more and more useful cloud-based functionality.

Google's master Android plan

Google has launched an effort to make everyone an Android software developer. The search giant is hellbent on growing its app inventory and the Android marketplace and has the momentum and open approach to just give Apple a run.

Now Google is offering a do-it-yourself mobile app tool. The tool, which is available now in Google Labs, is called App Inventor. Google sets the scene:

To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app’s behavior.

Mozilla bring Firefox 4 Beta version

It seems that Mozilla is in no mood to keep it easy for Internet Explorer. To counter the recent success that came to Internet Explorer, Mozilla has launched a beta version for Firefox 4.

The beta version brings with it a new look and of course a fresh stack of features. The entirely redone user interface for Firefox 4 Beta seems to be copy of Google Chrome. The tabs would come on the top by default and covering up Menu bar of course. To access the commands, it will come with a Firefox button and is carrying new add ons too on top of all those look and feel changes.

To make it more secure, few changes have been done and Mozilla has supposedly worked on some advanced protection features. In fact, the open source community has done bit on its crashes related issues; now if a plug in crashes, it would only be caused to end rather whole browser going down.

The beta version is expected to boost HTML5 support, full WebGL support for 3D rendering and in fact ad support for videos and everything. The browser is expected to be a killer product.

How to Change the Logon Screen Background in Windows 7

How would you like to change the logon screen background in Windows 7 so as to give your Windows a customized look and feel? With a small tweak it is possible to customize the Windows 7 logon screen and set your own picture/wallpaper as the background. Changing logon screen background in Windows 7 is as simple as changing your desktop wallpaper. Well here is a step by step instruction to customize the logon screen background.

1. The image you need to set as the background should be a .jpg file and it’s size should not exceed 245KB.

2. The image resolution can be anything of your choice. However I prefer 1440 x 900 or 1024 x 768. You can use any of the photo editing software such as Photoshop to compress and set the resolution for your image. Once you’re done, save this image as backgroundDefault.jpg.

3. You will need to copy this image to  : C:\Windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds

You will need to create that path if it does not already exist on your computer.

4. Now open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> Type regedit) and navigate to the following key : HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background

If Background does not exist rightclick LogonUI, select New and then Key, and then name it Background. Now locate OEMBackground (listed on the right side). If it does not exist, right-click Background and select New and then DWORD and name it OEMBackground.

5. Double-click on OEMBackground and set the Value Data to 1.

6. Now log-off to see the new logon screen background. If you would like to revert back to the default background, just set the Value Data back to 0.
