IBM beats Infosys as India's 2nd largest pvt sector employer

While the news that Tata Consultancy Services is India’s largest private sector employer comes as no surprise, what is shocking is the second largest employer in India. This honour goes to IBM.
TCS has hired about 1, 63,700 employees as on June 30, IBM has appointed more than one lakh people in India.
Though no one will admit in IBM’s headquarters in the USA that it has hired so many Indians for the fear of backlash at home, this is a reality which was, hitherto, kept a secret.
According to a report in The Times of India, even though the company’s spokesperson denied commenting about it, a source within the company said that in a couple of years, the India employee strength could cross that in the US, where it employs about 1,55,000 people, and where the pace of hiring is substantially slower than in India.
What is interesting to note is that IBM globally has a little over 4,00,000 employees. So, close to 1 in 3 of its employees is already an Indian.
IBM has been aggressively recruiting in India. If we compare the number of Indian employees in 2006 and 2007, we will see a difference of 20,000 employees. This IT giant was even hiring during recession and has plans to hire more in the coming months.
Another interesting factor to know is that its staff strength is more than four times that of India’s biggest private sector company, Reliance Industries, which recruits about 23,000 people.
Infosys is third largest recruiter which employs around 1.14 lakh employees as on June 30.

Tips to make your CV perfect

Some tips to make a perfect CV
  • Do not mention Resume or CV on top: It takes the most important space in your CV and a recruiter or a consultant does not need to be told that he is viewing a CV, he already knows it.
  • Don't address yourself: When you write your CV, recruiters know that you are talking about yourself, so avoid using these words. CVs should be brief, to the point, hence remove all unnecessary information.
  • Write an appealing career summary: Begin with a sensible and interesting career summary just below your contact details. Your CV should be able to attract the attention of recruiters as they see the first screen of their monitor.
  • Highlight your strengths and unique skills: Why should a company recruit you? What special skills you have? What is your USP? You need to mention all these in great details to get that interview call. You should mention your extracurricular activities, awards, hobbies, languages you know, academic and non academic interests. Give ample space and attention to non-academic interests and skills. List out all the leadership activities you undertook as a student, awards you won, sports you played, etc.
  • Don't make your CV too long: CV should not be so long as recruiters and HR managers don't have time to go through it as they view 100s of CVs everyday. Two pages length is perfect. There are some exceptions - some employers prefer as much information as possible, but on the whole, anything more than three pages may have a negative impact on your interview chances.
  • Make sure your CV is in right order: Mostly your employment history is more important than your educational qualifications. This means that on most occasions your employment history should be placed before your educational qualifications.
  • Avoid spelling mistakes and grammatical errors: Spelling and grammatical mistakes in your CV may even put you in an embarrassing situation. So, proofread your CV well before you send it to a prospective employer. Also, make sure to use the same tense throughout your CV to make it read well.
  • Personalise your CV for every job application: One of the most important thing you should keep in mind before sending your resume to a prospective employer is to optimise its relevancy for that particular post. Once you've viewed the company's website or newspaper and read the job advert you'll be able to determine whether or not there are aspects of your previous experience that don't presently feature on your CV. You should highlight your experience that is more pertinent to the job that is advertised.
  • Use a formal e-mail address: Many students create 'funky' or 'cool' e-mail addresses in college but remember that your CV is a formal document. So make sure that you send your CV from a formal e-mail address which is preferably an amalgamation of your first name and last name.
  • Use formal fonts: One must chose formal fonts to make a CV like Times New Roman, Arial, etc.

The Importance of Technology In Business

The Computer Trend - A Brief History

The last two decades have marked an enormous increase in the number of home computers. With it, computer owners have invariably taken to entrepreneurship in many varied fields. Thanks to the growth of technology, computers and the Internet, new methods have been developed for processing everyday business activities easily. Without the advent of technology, routine tasks would otherwise have taken and enormous amount of time and specialization. Undoubtedly, the computer represents the top technology development in the last century as it relates to businesses today, both large and small. Advances in the field of technology have created a vast number of business opportunities.

Some Statistics

In 2003, the U.S. Small Business Administration produced a report/survey that established conclusively that more than 75% of small businesses owned computers and had heavily invested in new technology. Let us try to understand what the computers mean to businesses and how they contribute to increase their productivity.
USE OF COMPUTERS IN BUSINESSES

The fundamental reasons for the popularity of computers with small businesses are their efficiency, speed, low procurement cost and more than anything else, capability to handle multiple tasks with little chance for error.
Office Routines: Almost invariably, businesses loaded with the burden of increasing workloads and the pressures of being lean and mean, fall back upon technology for most of their administrative tasks. This work includes, among others, bookkeeping, inventory managing and email. The advent of the Internet has also substantially contributed in bringing down the costs of communication and marketing. In a nutshell, technology has reduced the overall cost of business operations.

New Business Opportunities: The explosion of Internet and e-commerce has opened up a plethora of opportunities for all types of businesses. New management methodologies, such as Six  Sigma  are easier to implement due to statistical software. Also, companies are able to train their own employees using in-house Six Sigma software programs, and as a result, save money on labor costs.

It is now possible to have many business functions operate on autopilot. This has opened up new opportunities for software development companies and business consultants. Another business trend that has opened up as a result of advancing technology is outsourcing. It is now possible for a company in America to have its data entry and customer service centers in overseas countries such as the UK. In this way, companies can service their customers 24/7.

Indispensable Components of Small Businesses

It is difficult to think of a situation where businesses can do without technology and computers today. It is extremely difficult to say whether businesses depend on computers or computers created business opportunities.

Software Specific To Small Businesses

Certain powerful, yet simple software has come to the rescue of small businesses in reducing their tasks and opening up new channels. Simple applications like spreadsheets and word processing helps them maintain accounts, finances and keep track of correspondence. These applications allow the users to customize reports and other functions to suit their particular business.

Drawbacks

Both men and women in business have adapted successfully to new technology. But the SBA report cites the general decline in skill levels of people, which may eventually result in an overall reduction of income levels. It seems that people get used to technology doing all the work and tend to neglect their skill development. It is up to individual companies to make sure that their employees are still able to do crucial tasks without the assistance of computers, if necessary.
